Tarps or tents, sleeping bags, baby wipes, tampons/pads/feminine wipes, hand warmers, ground coffee and coffee mugs, rain ponchos, all day bus passes (child and adult) for school trips, health snacks for school supplies.
Also needed is dog food and winter pet supplies to help our guests and their pets this winter - pet food, collars, carriers, blankets, etc.
Friendship Park is a welcoming area near the dining room serving more poor and homeless people than we could have imagined. We found that over half of the guests were over 50 years old and are sleeping outside without shelter. About 53% of them reported disabilities and suffer from bi-polar disorder, severe anxiety or major depression. The simple amenities that Friendship Park offers, warm coffee, free showers, a change of clothes, etc., with a caring staff and volunteers - are a lifeline for people experiencing homelessness.
